  • Photos Harry Milne Duncan, son of Charles Duncan and Isabella Jaffrey was born in Burnend of Gight
Charles Duncan born 1812 at Bogfouton Farm, Forgue, Aberdeenshire and his son Charles Duncan jr. born 1846 at Thornybank, Auchterless, Aberdeenshire the Great and GG Grandfathers of John A. Duncan of Sketraw were both to end up living at Burnend of Gight, Millbrex, Fyvie, Aberdeenshire.

Charles senior and his is wife Elizabeth Sangster and Charles junior and his wife Isabella Jaffery and 9 children all lived and worked at the 5 acre Croft, supporting the family by additional work as ploughmen and farm servants around neighbouring farms. Around 1870 the additional house was built of timber (seen here) next to the heather thatched Croft House and Steading (outbuilding) sadly all you can see today is the remains of the original house and part of the steading buildings, with a new house now standing on the site of the original timber dwelling that is shown here.

The courtyard Burnend of Gight Croft shows a small tin roofed house. when Charles Duncan and Elzabeth Sangster first moved there with their sons, John Duncan & Charles and his wife Isabella Jaffray around 1868 the house would have been heather thatched. The asbestos roofed steading (outbuildings) at that time was also heather thatched.

A new timber house (not shown in this picture) was built to the left of the original dwelling in 1870 (see other picture) Charles Duncan jnr and his wife Isabella Jaffary were to raise 9 children on the 5 acre croft.
